How to choose a treadmill for your dog – Buyer’s Guide

You’ve decided to get your dog a new toy, wonderful! You’ve made a wise pet loving decision! Pet health is just as important for animals as it is for us humans.  So what are things to consider when buying a dog treadmill? There are four key elements that we’ve based our reviews on: speed, size, functions and cost.

Size:

This will be the first thing to consider. Smaller dogs can get intimidated by larger belts while bigger dogs need the right fit to allow for a natural gait. A proper fit can make all the difference in the training of your dog and more importantly, the dog’s enjoyment of their treading.

Speed:

You will have a choice between a stationary (dog powered) or automatic (motorized) treadmill. There’s a big difference here and determining the needs of your dog will help solve this decision. If you’re looking for more of a cardiovascular workout, or if your dog needs rehabilitation from an injury, then a motorized treadmill is a good option. If you prefer something a little safer and would rather let your dog dictate the pace; or if your dog is filled with excessive energy, then a stationary treadmill is the right choice.

Functions:

Does the dog treadmill offer the right kind of adjustments, such as incline and adjustable speeds? Can you program distance and resistance? If you plan on running your dog fast, you want to make sure that the treadmill comes with a safety collar clip which stops the machine if your dog slips or falls off.

Cost:

Basically, two things will determine the cost of a dog treadmill: size and functions. The bigger the treadmill, the more you will have to pay. The more functions on the machine, the higher the price. For example, motorized dog treadmills are more expensive than dog powered treadmills. Once you’ve determined the needs and goals of your pet, choose a treadmill that fits those requirements. No matter what choice you make or how much you plan on spending, a proper fit for your animal should be your first priority.
